German Dance in D Major- Haydn (RCM Level 1 2015 Syllabus): A Review

German Dance in D major is a great introduction to young piano players about the lovely key of D. It has a bright and cheerful theme that utilizes the best attributes of D Major. As well, the theme is played in octaves, so the player and listener get a crystal clear idea of the melody. The right hand plays the melody one octave above middle D, which gives the melody a grand and exciting opening.

Technique of German Dance in D Major

Students who play this piece should first be familiar with the key of D major. Because D major has both F# and C#, a good understanding of the tonal key will help avoid frustration for students as they learn the piece. A good way to do so is to introduce the D major diatonic scale. This helps students familiarize themselves with the key, and what black notes are relevant.

Furthermore, the piece calls for intervals of 4th’s quite often. Students should be well versed at identifying and playing perfect 4th’s. In addition, the hand position changes a few times. It is important to help the student note down where hand positions change, so they can practice and prepare for a smooth transition.

The dynamics and articulation is what gives this piece the magic factor. In common practice in Baroque music, forte and piano are contrasted with each other to give effect. A way to help students think about this concept, is to encourage the students to think about what instruments the composer might have been thinking of. Maybe the louder parts are meant for the trumpets, and the softer flutes are for woodwinds. Examples of Baroque music on YouTube could help students conceptualize as well.

Summary

Overall, German Dance in D major is a lovely piece for young students. The bright and powerful spirit appeals to their ears, and harmonically it is easy to digest. The dynamics are fun to do, and add an obvious musical effect to their playing.
