A review of Online piano lessons. A lesson that is traditionally face to face is transforming in the face of technology. I have to admit, I used to be a skeptic as well. How can someone teach music online? Is the sound good enough? Can you teach someone technique? I know I was not alone in this view.
When COVID-19 rocked our world, music teachers all across the world made the leap into online lessons. We found out after all, our doubts were unfounded. The students, mostly being digital natives, adapted quicker than the teachers did. All the fear about lag, and sound problems, never got in the way of true music making.
Advantages of Online Piano Lessons
I saw benefits emerge from my own students as we pivoted to these online piano lessons. They included
- Increased Student Engagement
- The students wrote in their won markings on the page, giving them more involvement, and helping them remember what the markings mean
- Developed Their Inner Rhythm
- I usually played along side the student, or counted out loud to give students a sense of pulse. Because of the internet latency issue, the students had to count themselves. Some of them learned how to use a metronome fantastically.
- Students Learn on Their Own Instrument
- Context can be very important for children. During these virtual lessons, children learn directly on their own instrument, where they realize music is indeed possible at home.
At EN Music Studio
EN Music Studio has incorporated a two-angle set up, allowing students to interact through a camera that shows my face, and a bird’s eye view camera that shows the piano.
I realize again with the pivot to online piano lessons, that we must trust that our children are more capable than we think. These virtual lessons remained completely independent from parent help as they were in studio. The students kept learning, and they kept progressing. As a review of online piano lessons, I have to say that distance learning can be a smooth success.
